Chlorophyll vs chlorophyllin
Chlorophyll, chlorophyllin, spirulina, chlorella and the “grass” powders are often called by the same name, but they are different things. This page explains what each one is. It makes no claim about treating or preventing any disease.
What each one is
- Chlorophyllin (sodium copper chlorophyllin)
- A water-soluble, semi-synthetic derivative made from chlorophyll, in which the central magnesium is replaced by copper and the molecule is converted to its sodium salt.
- Spirulina
- A blue-green microorganism (a cyanobacterium) sold as a dried powder or tablet. It contains chlorophyll together with other pigments such as phycocyanin.
- Chlorella
- A single-celled green freshwater alga sold as powder or tablets. It contains chlorophyll.
- Wheatgrass
- The young shoots of the wheat plant (Triticum aestivum), sold as fresh juice or dried powder. It contains chlorophyll.
- Barley grass
- The young shoots of the barley plant (Hordeum vulgare), usually sold as a dried powder. It contains chlorophyll.
- Alfalfa
- The leaves of the legume Medicago sativa, used dried or as an extract. It contains chlorophyll.
Frequently asked questions
Is chlorophyll the same as chlorophyllin?
No. Chlorophyll is the natural green pigment found in plants and algae; its central atom is magnesium and it dissolves in fat, not in water. Chlorophyllin is a semi-synthetic derivative of chlorophyll, usually sodium copper chlorophyllin, in which magnesium is replaced by copper. It dissolves in water.
Why is chlorophyllin used in supplements?
Because it is water-soluble and more stable than natural chlorophyll, which breaks down easily with heat, light and acid. Supplement makers use it so that the pigment can be standardised and dosed.
Is a green powder such as spirulina or wheatgrass the same as chlorophyllin?
No. Those are whole foods or algae that contain chlorophyll among many other substances. Chlorophyllin is one purified, modified molecule. They are different kinds of product.
Can a supplement replace vegetables or medical treatment?
No. A dietary supplement is not a substitute for a balanced diet, and it is not a medicine. Speak to a doctor before using any supplement, especially if you are pregnant, taking medicines or have a medical condition.
What is Biophyll?
Biophyll is Ownmor Global’s chlorophyllin-based dietary supplement. See the Biophyll product page for its ingredients, pack details and directions for use.
